How Instacart Shoppers Calculate Self-Employment Taxes

Instacart full-service shoppers are independent contractors, so no income or payroll tax is withheld from your batch pay and tips. You report your earnings and expenses on Schedule C, pay self-employment tax on the profit, add federal and state income tax, and send estimated payments each quarter. Your driving between stores and customers is usually your largest deduction. This calculator turns your earnings, miles and costs into your net profit, your tax bill and the amount to set aside each quarter.

Net profit = Instacart earnings − Other expenses − (Miles × Mileage rate)
Self-employment tax = Net profit × 92.35% × 15.3% (12.4% Social Security up to $184,500 + 2.9% Medicare)
Income tax = Brackets applied to (Net profit − ½ SE tax − Standard deduction − QBI deduction)
Quarterly set-aside = (SE tax + Federal tax + State tax) ÷ 4

How the Standard Mileage Rate Works for Instacart Shoppers

Mileage deduction = Business miles × Standard mileage rate
11,000 miles × $0.76 = $8,360

The mileage deduction is subtracted before any tax is calculated, so it lowers both self-employment tax and income tax. In the example below the deduction saves about $1,626 in tax, and a heavier-mileage Instacart shopper with $40,000 in earnings and 20,000 miles saves about $3,354. Keep a mileage log with the date, miles and purpose of each trip so you can back up the deduction.

Worked Example: An Instacart Shopper Earning $24,000 and Driving 11,000 Miles

Scenario: a single Instacart shopper in Texas with $24,000 in payouts (including tips), 11,000 miles driven between stores and customers, and $700 of other expenses for insulated bags, a phone mount and the business share of a phone bill. No other income.

  1. Mileage deduction: 11,000 × $0.76 = $8,360.
  2. Net profit: $24,000 − $8,360 − $700 = $14,940.
  3. Self-employment tax: $14,940 × 92.35% = $13,797, and $13,797 × 15.3% = $2,111.
  4. Half of the SE tax ($1,055) is deductible, leaving adjusted income of about $13,885.
  5. Federal income tax: adjusted income is below the $16,100 standard deduction, so the federal bill is $0. Texas has no state income tax.
  6. Quarterly set-aside: $2,111 ÷ 4 = about $528, roughly 8.8% of gross earnings. Net take-home pay is $24,000 − $8,360 − $700 − $2,111 = $12,829.

Without the mileage deduction this Instacart shopper would owe about $3,736 in tax, which is $1,626 more.

Frequently Asked Questions

Platforms typically report contractor earnings on Form 1099-NEC or 1099-K depending on your gross volume and state thresholds; check your platform dashboard for official documents. A Form 1099-NEC reports payments for services made directly to you (the long-standing threshold is $600, scheduled to rise to $2,000 for payments made after 2025). A Form 1099-K reports payments processed by a third-party network or marketplace and shows gross amounts with no expenses netted out; at the federal level it generally applies once payments pass more than $20,000 in gross payments and more than 200 transactions, and some states use lower limits. Either way, all self-employment income is taxable, including tips, even if you never receive a form. See the IRS guidance on understanding your Form 1099-K, Form 1099-NEC and filing information returns.

Estimated payments are due April 15 (income earned January 1 to March 31), June 15 (April 1 to May 31), September 15 (June 1 to August 31) and January 15 of the following year (September 1 to December 31). If a date lands on a weekend or holiday it moves to the next business day. You can pay with Form 1040-ES, IRS Direct Pay or EFTPS. The calculator above shows your next due date and how much to send each quarter.

Miles driven for your batches, such as driving to the store, between stores and from the store to the customer, are the clearest to deduct. Ordinary commuting between home and a regular workplace is not deductible, and miles driven while waiting for batches can depend on your situation, so ask a tax professional. Keep your own mileage log with the date, miles and purpose of each trip.

Groceries bought for customers with the shopper payment card are a pass-through: the cost is neither your income nor your deductible expense. Enter only what Instacart paid you (batch pay, tips and promotions). If you personally pay for items that you are not reimbursed for, ask a tax professional whether they are deductible.

Yes. Insulated bags and coolers, phone mounts and similar supplies are ordinary business expenses, and so is the business-use share of your phone and data plan. If 70% of your phone use is for Instacart, you can deduct 70% of the bill. Enter the total in the other expenses box. Parking and tolls are deductible on top of the mileage rate.

It depends on your profit, state and other income. In the example below, the set-aside is about 8.8% of gross earnings, because the mileage deduction removes a large part of the income from tax. A second job, or fewer miles per dollar earned, will raise it, so use the percentage in the results.
